The theme of the Oceanside School District is Purpose, Passion, and People. While we seek to foster within our students the same enthusiasm for science, literature, and politics that drove many of us into this profession, our true desire is to develop a passion for deep, critical thought and informed action.
It is with great excitement that I outline the power and potential of our professional network, explain our origins, define our mission, and highlight how this team and its work can impact learning in Oceanside and throughout the nation.
As the only school district in New York to belong to the C3 Lab School and one of only 16 hubs throughout the country, Oceanside’s leadership on the C3 Lab School places our district at the center of social studies instruction in New York and the nation.
If you look closely at the map, you will see that the C3 logo illustrates the regional diversity of our Lab School. With 14 states represented, this Lab School brings together some of the best teachers and school leaders nationwide and has created a platform for the sharing of innovative instructional ideas and professional feedback.
I am most proud to highlight that this national network was started right here in the Oceanside schools; and our leadership on the C3 Lab School gives Oceanside a prominent voice in the national discussion on social studies education and inquiry-based instruction.

“Know Thoroughly Think Critically; Act Ethically”
These words greet all who enter the doors of Oceanside High School; they could also serve as the guiding principle of the C3 Lab School. Our students are growing up in a society that is less about consuming informing than about evaluating competing claims. Our students are being asked to take evidence-based positions on historical and contemporary issues and to present their positions using a variety of platforms. Our students are asked to write and create for authentic audiences. This has empowered our students to Take Informed Action, which, by design, brings classroom learning into the world. Ultimately, our students are being inspired to develop a civic minded worldview; a worldview that places a responsibility on each student to become informed and engaged citizens.
The work that is being done in Oceanside and throughout the C3 Lab School holds the promise for strengthening social studies instruction nationwide. The professional learning and collaboration is empowering, allowing teachers and school leaders to further develop and refine lessons, questioning techniques, and assessments.
Oceanside is at the forefront of a national movement in social studies; it is our passion as a district that is the driving force!
